ABOUT
Keeping the human in higher education.
Behind every metric is a human being.
WHY I DO THIS WORK
I know what becomes possible when someone sees your potential, and helps you act on it.
My journey from Quetta to university leadership on the global stage was shaped by education, perseverance and people who opened doors. It taught me how profoundly the right guidance, opportunity or act of kindness can change a life.
It also taught me how much potential we leave unrealized when people feel unheard, unsupported or unseen.
I have been the international student far from home, the researcher struggling toward a doctorate, and the leader carrying decisions that affect other people's futures.
I do this work because I want others to have somewhere to turn, and the confidence to move forward.
I want students to see possibilities beyond their circumstances. Researchers to grow through their work. Faculty to have opportunities worthy of their contribution. And leaders to recognize that every exercise of power touches a human life.
Through Human First Institute, I am putting my experience into helping people realize their potential and use it to make life better for others.
“When I lost my senior executive role unexpectedly, I wished there was somewhere to turn. That became my purpose: to build that place for others.”
WHERE I COME FROM
My journey began with education. It became a mission to open doors for others.
At 24, I left Quetta, a city in Pakistan's western province of Balochistan, to pursue my master's and PhD in Scotland, UK.
I carried my family's hopes alongside my own ambition. Ahead lay an unfamiliar country, demanding academic work and the challenge of building a life far from home.
Earning my doctorate tested far more than my ability to conduct research. There were sleepless nights, uncertainty and moments when the finish line felt impossibly distant. I learned how much courage it takes to continue when confidence runs low.
Within 12 years of leaving Quetta, at 36, I had become Pro-Vice Chancellor and Acting Vice Chancellor, the youngest in Pakistan to hold both roles.
The young international student had become responsible for decisions that shaped the education, careers and futures of others.
I have taught in universities in Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States, and held senior leadership roles in Pakistan, the United Kingdom and Canada. Today, I work as a professor in Canada, drawing on more than 22 years in higher education.
Across those years, I have experienced university life from different chairs: the student trying to belong, the researcher struggling to progress, the faculty member supporting others, and the executive carrying the weight of institutional responsibility.
Those experiences shaped a belief that now guides everything I do: behind every metric is a human being.
A student whose potential is still unfolding. A researcher whose confidence is fragile. A colleague whose contribution goes unseen. A university president who carries immense responsibility with few places to speak openly.
Then, losing my senior executive role unexpectedly gave me a new question to answer: what could I build that would put everything I had learned in service of others?
My answer was Human First Institute.
I founded HFI with the ambition to build an institute of international standards and stature, one that makes excellent development accessible across borders and recognizes the human needs that accompany every stage of academic life. A place to find direction when you are starting out, perspective when responsibility grows, and renewed possibility when life changes unexpectedly.
I remain grateful to those who opened doors for me. My responsibility now is to help open doors for others.
I left Quetta to discover what education could make possible for me. Today, I am building what it can make possible for others.

WHY HUMAN FIRST INSTITUTE EXISTS
Potential should never be left without somewhere to turn.
A student can enter university full of promise and struggle to find their place. A researcher can spend years pursuing a doctorate and lose confidence along the way. A gifted academic can be ready to lead yet remain unseen. A university president can carry enormous responsibility with nowhere to speak openly.
I built Human First Institute for the person inside each of those experiences.
I know academia from the student's desk to the Vice Chancellor's office, and I know how much it matters to have somewhere to turn for guidance, growth and renewed possibility.
Through HFI, I help academics rise into opportunity, lead with heart and thrive through change. I support doctoral researchers as whole human beings. And I work with institutions to make decisions that recognize the people who live with their consequences.
My ambition is international excellence with meaningful access. Where you live, what you earn or the title you hold should never define the limits of your potential.
Through learning, mentoring, advisory work, speaking and research, I help people turn that potential into a contribution that reaches beyond themselves, to their universities, communities and societies.
Behind every metric is a human being. I built HFI to help that human being flourish.

My understanding of leading with heart has been profoundly shaped by the life and leadership example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: mercy, justice, humility, consultation and courage in the exercise of power. Human First Institute is open to people of every faith and background.
